Post by SomeoneJust wanted to know from people who use Primus High Speed Internet if
you're happy with it. Any problems? Comments? I'm in Vancouver.
I've had Primus DSL in Richmind Hill, ON and it's pretty good. At first I
had some problems with their news server and they said they had no intention
to upgrade, but I haven't had any problems in a long time. And, at first,
the service did seem to slow down a bit sometimes, but never very badly.
Unlike Bell/Sympatico, mail seems to go in and out very quickly, but they
offer (and require, soon if not already) authenticated SMTP. I didn't
realize that they blocked port 25 until I was messing with our mail servers
at work and wanted to test them, but couldn't.
Probably the best thing about Primus, though, is their support; when I wrote
them with questions such as the one about the USENET server, I got a direct,
appropriate, honest response pretty quick... not like Sympatico where, when
they get around to answering you, you get an answer that had nothing to do
with your question.
Even here in Ontario, few reasonably well-known (and well-connected)
companies offer truly unlimited usage at the going rate (i.e., what
Sympatico charges, or $10 less if you have your own modem) and Primus even
offers bonus Air Miles.
I'm a telecom guy so I'm tempted to move on to Golden or Sentex just because
they're there but, unless you're looking for some advanced feature, I don't
expect you'll find much better (or much cheaper) than Primus.
